Medical and Surgical Outreach Program
Services Provided at Outreach
The main purpose of the medical (eye screening & treatment) and surgical (e.g. cataract) outreach is to educate community members about blindness prevention and provide basic eye health services to underserved communities. The outreach program is run by trained ophthalmic nurses and volunteers. At each community outreach NSEC staff and volunteers:
Conduct eye health education and Register patients
Perform visual acuity testing and eye examinations
Provide treatment, refraction and reading glasses
Measure and control blood pressure
Provide patient counseling and make referrals as required
Outreach eye screening is usually held at a community center, school campus, church, clinic or hospital. Publicity for the community outreach is often done by the local community leader in collaboration with outreach team members. The surgical outreach depends on the volume of patients that require eye surgery after the eye screening is conducted. This primary eye health program provided at the community level helps eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
Outreach Scheduled:
Medical: four times every month
Surgical: Once every quarter
